Mahindra & Mahindra and Boeing are in talks to plan to jointly manufacture twin-engine fighter aircraft in India if Boeing wins the bidding process for the defence sector.

The two companies may expand their existing partnership in India to manufacture the F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets for the Indian Air Force, people privy to the developments told CNBC-TV18.

The exploratory talks are for a 51:49 joint venture, they said, adding that M&M will help Boeing  indigenise Super Hornets if the American company wins the contract.

The two companies had signed an intent for a helicopter JV in 2015 and currently operate a training centre in Gurgaon.

Refraining to comment on speculative reports, an M&M spokesperson said the company has a strong existing relationship with Boeing.
