Sweden Defence Major Saab Offers Latest Aircraft, Parrikar Pitches For Make In India

At the ongoing Aero Show 2017 in Bengaluru, Sweden’s major defence manufacturer Saab has offered its latest generation fighter aircraft Gripen E to India. The next generation jet will be unveiled on May 18.

Saab has offered to manufacture jet in India under ‘Make in India; initiative which has also been the point of Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

“There are many companies who are offering their technology to India, however, we will first ensure that the jets or weapons come under ‘Make In India’,” said Parrikar.

Parrikar also said that the companies offering such deals must get needful clearances from respective government sectors.

“The companies which are offering such deals under Make in India’ need to get the required permission and clearance from the respective government sectors to set up a manufacturing plant,” added the Union Minister.

Gripen E, is equipped with latest technology and can carry more weapons & fuel than its predecessors.

It is also armed with the technology to guide glide bombs, carry long range air-to-air missiles along with heavy anti-ship missiles as well.

The engine is also more power in this latest gen version with dimensions of 15.2 meter length and 8.6 meter breadth. It has takeoff weight of 16,500 kg.
